Becoming Foster Parents
Becoming Foster Parents
Early on in our relationship my husband Taylor and I discussed becoming foster parents. Naturally this discussion was full of many questions and ponderings as we both came in with strong options. I got my degree in social work and had become very familiar with the blaring need for the Church to step up and serve children and their biological families. Seeing this need broke my heart and would research night and day on how I could help this issue, even came to the point of wanting to pursue becoming a single foster mom.
After years of prayer and discussion, we have decided to become license. I am not naïve enough to say we are ready for all that is ahead of us. I would say we are fighting to surround ourselves with community because we are well aware of all we are not ready for and know it "takes a village" to serve children and their bio-families well.
Recently two books have strongly influenced us, Foster the Family by - and The Gospel Comes with a House Key by -. Both of these books are absolutely fantastic and I would encourage anyone of you to read them.
We've learned the point is to "get too attached." Many individuals (including us) us that as an excuse to not become involved in foster care, what if that is the whole point and why you should become involved?! Think of what Jesus replies as the greatest commandment, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind... Love your neighbor as yourself." (Matthew 22:37-39) Why would I ever let heart break hold me back from serving the Lord, when I also spend time praying for the Lord to break my heart for what breaks his.
As we become foster parents and open our home to all that the Lord is doing in and through the workers, families, court system, ect. we ask for you support. Thank you for walking alongside us!
